Dutch health insurance premiums have increased again in 2026. The average monthly premium for the mandatory basic package (basisverzekering) is now around €148/month, up from €142 in 2025. Here's what you need to know and how to reduce your costs.
What changed in 2026?
- Average premium: Rose from €142 to €148/month (+4.2%).
- Mandatory deductible (eigen risico): Remains at €385 per year — this is the amount you pay out of pocket before insurance covers costs.
- Children under 18: Still free — no premium and no deductible.
- Zorgtoeslag (healthcare allowance): Maximum amounts increased slightly to offset the premium rise. Singles can receive up to approximately €127/month.
Premium comparison by insurer
Premiums for the basic package (basisverzekering) vary by insurer. Here are representative monthly premiums for popular insurers in 2026:
| Insurer | Monthly premium | Type |
|---|---|---|
| CZ | €144 | Natura (in-network) |
| Zilveren Kruis | €147 | Restitutie (any provider) |
| VGZ | €149 | Natura |
| Menzis | €151 | Natura |
| ONVZ | €156 | Restitutie |
Note: Natura policies are cheaper but limit you to in-network providers. Restitutie policies let you see any doctor — important for expats who may want to visit specialists without a referral.
How to claim zorgtoeslag
Zorgtoeslag is the Dutch healthcare allowance that helps offset insurance costs. You qualify if:
- You're 18 or older and live in the Netherlands.
- You have Dutch health insurance (basisverzekering).
- Your annual income is below approximately €38,520 (single) or €48,224 (with fiscal partner) in 2026.
- Your savings/assets are below the threshold.
Apply through Toeslagen.nl using your DigiD. The allowance is paid monthly and can be backdated up to 3 months. Use our health insurance comparison tool to estimate your zorgtoeslag amount.
Tips for expats
- Register within 4 months. You must take out Dutch health insurance within 4 months of registration (or starting work) in the Netherlands. Late registration results in a fine of approximately €468.
- Consider a restitutie policy if you want flexibility to see English-speaking doctors and specialists without referrals.
- Add supplementary insurance (aanvullende verzekering) for dental, physiotherapy, or mental health coverage — the basic package has limited coverage in these areas.
- Check your employer benefits. Some employers offer collective health insurance discounts of 5–10% off premiums.
